Vol. 21, No. 6 - November/December 2021
Dear Experimenter,

Season's Greetings! I am happy to share another answer or two from our statistical consulting team to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about design of experiments (DOE), as well as timely alerts for events, publications, and software updates. Check it out! Feel free to get back to me via [email protected] with further questions or comments: I would really appreciate hearing from you!

Please do not send me requests to subscribe or unsubscribe, follow the instructions at the end of this message.

FAQ
Should I include water as a component in my mixture design?
Original question from a Principal Scientist:
“I want to vary 5 active ingredients dissolved into water for in my mixture design. Should I include water as a component when setting up this experiment?”

Answer from Stat-Ease Consultant Shari Kraber:
“In mixture designs, the important relationship with the responses is how the changing proportions of the ingredients effect the response. Water is part of those proportions in your formulation, so it should be part of the design.”

As a chemical engineer, I like Shari’s advice. Allowing water (or whatever you deem “inert”) to vary makes the mixture design far more effective by, in essence, allowing the total of the active ingredients to vary. By the way, simply enter the inert component(s) last with a range from zero to your total. Stat-Ease software then will work out what the limits must be. Smart! - Mark

SOFTWARE ALERT
Stat-Ease® 360 expands our horizon far beyond Design-Expert® software

Being a principal of Stat-Ease since our beginning in 1982, I am very enthused to see the landmark release of Stat-Ease 360 (SE360), which provides significantly more statistical functionality while maintaining the same awesome interface as Design-Expert (DX).

SE360’s Python scripting tools make it easy for high-level data analysts to write automated scripts and custom code, thus combining the power of this high-level programming tool with DX’s outstanding capabilities in one seamless workflow.

For those doing R&D with the aid of simulations, SE360's new Latin hypercube and optimal space-filling designs provide a welcome option to more traditional layouts for non-deterministic experiments. Gaussian process models complement these new computer-experiment designs.

Furthermore, SE360 expands the logistic regression tools introduced in DX13 with a classification node that includes ROC curve plots and other graphical assessments for binary outcomes.
