FAQ
How to handle hard-to-change factors
Original question from a statistican:
“I watched your webinar on Powerful DOE Tools to Catalyze Oil, Gas and Petrochemical R&D. One of your examples was a 5-factor design to maximize yield of a chemical reaction in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). But, what if factors such as temperature and atmosphere (nitrogen or air) cannot be easily randomized due to them being hard to change? Does Stat-Ease software support split plot factorial designs and/or response surface methods (RSM) for process optimization?”
Answer:
Yes, Stat-Ease software provides split-plot designs for factorials, RSMs (see screen shot below for CSTR case), mixture designs and combined designs (mixture and/or process and/or categorical inputs).

Although fully randomized designs provide maximum power for factorial effect and precision for RSM predictions, split plots often provide the only practical way for experimenters to deploy DOE. For a demonstration of these tools, see our recorded webinar on Split-Plot Pros and Cons: Dealing with a Hard-to-Change Factor.

EVENTS
On July 27 I will present a talk on “Making the Most from Reliability Experiments via Multifactor Testing” to the 2023 Reliability, Maintenance & Managing Risk Conference (RMMR2023) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I look forward to meeting with fellow members of the American Society of Quality (ASQ), in particular those from the Reliability and Risk Division—the sponsors.
